Shennong is a benevolent primordial god who accompanied Fu Xi to civilize mankind. His ambitious mind could not be satisfied easily and he began inventing new tools and techniques so the mortals would be able to exceed Fu Xi's high standards. He is described as having the head of an ox, with a bronze forehead and an iron skull, and is known as the "god of the burning wind" due to the agricultural slash-and-burn method he taught.

He was said to know many secrets, including the path to immortality and how to create gold. Over time he improved the tools for woodcutting and field work and facilitated trade with the introduction of a weekly market. Gunpowder and the lunisolar calendar are some of the many inventions that he bestowed upon humanity.

Shennong introduced acupuncture and tasted hundreds of herbs to test their medical value. He taught his findings to humans, making him the father of the traditional Chinese medicine. One time, twigs were carried up from the hot air of the fire and the burning leaves landed in his cauldron of boiling water. When Shennong tasted it, he discovered hot tea and found it to be acting as an antidote against the poisonous effects of seventy herbs that he tested on his body. He eventually died and returned to Heaven as a result of his researches, when he ate the yellow flower of a weed that caused his intestines to rupture before he had time to swallow his antidotal tea. Giving one's life for the sake of humanity, he has since received special honor through his worship as the Medicine King. Although he could no longer bring progress to humanity personally, some minds had already acquired his progressive way of thinking and continue his legacy while their delighted teacher watches their doings from Heaven.

Others claim that Shennong is another name of Yandi the Flame Emperor, who lost the battle for the future of mankind against Huang Di the Yellow Emperor.
